Methods of Instruction

This is a 4 credit hour course. Normally, a four credit hour course would meet four hours each week (during a 16 week term) or 64 hours per term. However, this class is a six week course, which means you will complete 64 hours of in-class work in six weeks, rather than 16. In this class, about 5 class hours will be spent in regular classroom attendance. You will spend the remaining time (about 5 class hours) engaged in structured online class activities, such as completing vocabulary and grammar exercises. In addition to the hours per week of in-class and online activities, you should expect to complete several hours (5 to 10 hours) of homework activities. In our weekly classroom meetings, you will participate in group activities and interactive exercises as well as individual work. Outside of the class you will have special online assignments and exercises to complete on the computer.

Course Participation and Attendance Policy

Regular, active, and meaningful participation in both on campus class meetings and online learning activities is a critically important component of this course and is essential to your success. It is recommended that you log into the course site several times during the online week and complete the assigned activities. Frequency and quality of participation may affect your grade.

Participation

BC Attendance Policy
Please familiarize yourself with BC's Attendance Policy.

If you do not attend the first class meeting or do not complete the online orientation you will be withdrawn from the class and receive a WN for non-attendance.

It is very important for you to actively participate in this online class. If you stop participating in class discussions, submitting assignments or fail to take quizzes or tests prior to the withdrawal date, you will be administratively withdrawn from class and receive a W or, if it is your third attempt, an F.

If you stop participating after the withdrawal date, you will receive a WF that will then be computed as an F in your GPA. To avoid this situation, you should remain an active learner in this class and always communicate extenuating circumstances to me. Ongoing communication with the instructor is critical to your course success. I will use completion of tests, assignments, and other class activities as indicators of your participation in order to satisfy this reporting requirement.

Instructor's Face-to-Face Attendance Policy
You are expected to complete all online assignments, attend all classes, and arrive on time. Because we only meet face-to-face 50% of the time, only two (2) absences are allowed for any reason. A third (3rd) absence will result in a reduction of one letter grade in the course. A fourth (4th) absence will result in a grade of "F" for the course. You are also expected to stay until the end of the face-to-face class meeting. Arriving late and/or leaving early twice will count as one absence. Please sign the attendance sheet for each class meeting to insure that you are given credit for your attendance.

BC Attendance Policy
Please familiarize yourself with BC's Attendance Policy

Instructor's Online Attendance Policy
Students are required to attend class online as well as face-to-face. Online attendance is measured by assignment completion. Failure to complete any one week's online assignments counts as an absence, and the same absence penalties that are described in the face-to-face policy, apply to online absences.

Course Schedule

Learning Materials
This course uses a textbook and a digital text and lab program as resources, but is not dependent upon a basic text for implementation. Learning materials, therefore, are not cited in the Course Schedule. To complete out of class assignments, students are directed to access the Assignments and Content folder on the Blackboard Homepage where there is a Learning Module for each unit of instruction. Within each Learning Module is an Assignment Menu with links to specific assignments. Each assignment contains specific learning outcomes, specific instructions for completion, and a citation of which learning materials or resources should be used to achieve the assignment's outcome(s).

Assessments
Assessments and their instructions for access are obtained as a natural consequence of seamlessly working through the Assignment Menu in each unit's Learning Module.

Note: If a test is to be proctored face-to-face, rather than taken online, the instructor will notify students in class.

Out of Class Assignments
The assignment list in the "Assignments (Out of Class Required)" column is a summary of the assignments you must complete in order to fulfill your online course contact hours and homework requirements.

To complete out of class assignments for each unit, click on the Learning Module for that unit. (Learning Modules are found in the "Assignments and Course Content" folder on the course homepage.) When you click on a unit's Learning Module, an Assignment Menu will open with a list of links to every assignment that is due. When the Menu opens:

  1. Click Arrow on the Checklist link at the top of the "Assignment Menu". Print it, and as you go through the week, check off each assignment, and all of its parts, as you complete it. This procedure will keep you on track and help you remember where you left off.
  2. Click Arrow each assignment link, one-by-one and in order (as you go through the week). When an assignment page opens, read the expected outcome(s) and all instructions. Then thoroughly complete the entire assignment.

Note: These out of class assignments are your required online class and homework activities and must be completed to earn credit for the course.

How to Use the Course Schedule
At the beginning of each unit, read the out of class summary of assignments and the expected outcomes. Note the due date for your assignments, and read the in class activities list. Performing this preview will alert you to what is expected of you and help you plan your time.

Communication Policy

Expectations for Course Communication

  1. BC E-mail: Please do not send course related emails to the instructor's BC email address. Only use the Blackboard e-mail address. Assignments sent to the instructor's BC e-mail address will not be accepted. Send your assignments to the instructor via WebCT using the WebCT feature identified in the syllabus and orientation.
  2. Blackboard E-mail: Use the e-mail tool only for private, personal, one to one communication with a specific individual or groups of individuals.
  3. Discussions: Please check the discussion area regularly. Use the class discussion tool to post questions that might be of general interest to all students such as questions about assignments, tests, etc. Feel free to respond to other students if you think you can help them. Remember - we are all in this together and we can learn from each other. Remember also that the discussion tool is public - everyone will be able to view posts and responses.
    1. Post to the Course Questions thread, all questions relating to course technology or procedures.
    2. Post to the Spanish Language Questions thread all questions relating to Spanish Language Grammar, pronunciation, etc.
    3. Never post personal telephone numbers, or questions related to personal issues in the Discussion Forum. Only use Blackboard email for those.
  4. Chat Rooms: Chat Rooms allow you to talk with other students in the course in real-time outside of your on-campus class meetings. Students must setup times at which to meet other students in the chat room. This is a useful tool for coordinating group projects.
  5. Netiquette: In all online communication, it is expected that all students will follow rules of online "netiquette". Netiquette is a set of rules for polite online behavior that all members of this class are expected to follow. See details at http://www.albion.com/netiquette/index.html. Basically, these rules say "be respectful and be polite to each other". And "be patient and considerate of others". No one is perfect and we all have different approaches to life, work, and school.
    1. Individuals who violate the netiquette policy or engage in disruptive online behaviors such as flaming (posting disrespectful or hostile comments), posting inappropriate comments, or shouting (posting messages using all capitals) may have their course access privileges revoked and/or they may be referred to the Student Dean. Students who continue to engage in unacceptable online behavior even after being warned, may be permanently denied access to the course and/or may receive an F for the course.
    2. Please do not use e-mail short hand like ROTFLO (rolling on the floor laughing outloud) or BTW (by the way) - not everyone knows what these abbreviations mean.
    3. Remember that in the real world we can see the facial expressions, gestures, and hear tone of voice. We can't do that online so it's very easy to misinterpret another person's meaning, or to be misinterpreted ourselves. Be careful of how you communicate to your instructor and to your peers online. If you want to use emoticons (smileys) to convey feelings, please stick with the basics: happy :-) sad :-( or wink ;-) Others are less well known and are subject to different interpretations. The idea is to be clear in your communications.
    4. If you have a concern about the course, a test or an assignment, please contact the instructor.

Privacy Notice
Blackboard software automatically stores course access records, quiz scores, e-mail postings, discussion postings, and chatroom conversations. One more reason to make sure that your communications adhere to the netiquette policy.

Alternate Communication
In the unlikely event that a Blackboard problem makes it impossible to use the course communication tools for more than 24 hours, the instructor will communicate with students (if necessary) via their BC email addresses. Access your BC e-mail account at http://www.broward.edu/info/studentemail/Home.jsp

Faculty Response Policy
Course emails and discussion posts will be answered within 48 hours (2 business days - excludes weekends). Emails sent on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday may not be answered until after Monday. It is important that you post course related questions in the discussion area. If you need information related to a test or assignment, plan ahead and submit your questions well ahead of the due date. Your instructor is not online 24 hours per day, so it is critical that you plan ahead and allow at least 48 hours for a response.

Other Policies and Procedures

Special Needs
Students having special needs as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act should:

  1. Notify the Office of Disability Services as early in the term as possible. It is the student's responsibility to contact the Disability Support Office to document disability prior to receiving services.
  2. Notify the instructor after you have contacted the Office of Disability Services so that the instructor can consult with the Office of Disability Services to discuss what reasonable accommodations would be appropriate for your situation.
  3. Graphics (photos and illustrations) have descriptions that appear when the cursor is passed over them. Those descriptions can easily be read by "Jaws" or any other text reader program.

Academic Honesty (Cheating)

  1. Each student's academic work must be the result of his or her own thought, research, or self-expression.
  2. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: copying the work of another person (plagiarism) or permitting your work to be copied by another person, having a native speaker or otherwise advanced speaker of Spanish write your essays, discussing test answers or questions with people who have not completed the test, distributing assignment materials to other students, possessing course materials that have not been formally released to students in the course, and collaborating on the completion of assignments not specifically designated in the syllabus as being "group projects".
  3. Cheating will be considered a breach of Broward College's Code of Conduct Policy and may result in academic penalties (zero points on the assignment/test in question, a failing grade for the course), disciplinary action, and/or a referral to the Dean of Student Affairs. Examples (in the instructor's judgement), 1) If it appears that two or more students have submitted the same material for any solo assignments, each student involved will receive zero points for that assignment. 2) If it appears that a student has copied an assignment from published material (including Internet sites), the student will receive zero points for that assignment. If the instructor believes a native speaker or other advanced Spanish speaker has written a student's composition, a student has copied the composition from an external source, or a student has received assistance on a test, the burden of proof shall be on the student under terms designated by the instructor (including a proctored repeat of a parallel test or essay).

Critical Event Procedure
In the event of a school closing due to weather or other major event that might impact class schedules, the instructor will post an announcement indicating what changes (if any), the event will have on the course schedule and due dates.

Copyright
The materials used on this course Web site may be protected by copyright and are only for the use of students enrolled in this course for the purposes associated with this course and may not be retained or further disseminated.

Withdrawals
If you stop participating in class discussions, submitting assignments or fail to take quizzes or tests prior to the withdrawal date, you will be administratively withdrawn from class and receive a W or, if it is your third attempt, an F.

If you stop participating after the withdrawal date, June 04, 2010, you will receive a WF that will then be computed as an F in your GPA. To avoid this situation, you should remain an active learner in this class and always communicate extenuating circumstances to me. Ongoing communication with the instructor is critical to your course success. I will use completion of tests, online class and homework assignments, and other class activities as indicators of your participation in order to satisfy this reporting requirement.

Student Success Tips

In order to be successful in this course, you will need to be organized and manage your time well so that you can complete all assignments and assessments on time. The orientation for this course requested you to make a weekly schedule for course access and assignment completion. Please be sure to follow that schedule faithfully. You will need to devote at least 10 to 12 out of class hours per week to complete the learning activities required in this course. (Because everyone learns differently, and most people have varied experiences with online learning, it is possible that some students will need to spend greater amounts of time than predicted.) Make sure that you do not allow yourself to procrastinate, and that you communicate with the instructor or your classmates, via Discussion Forum, if you have any questions on any course materials or need assistance completing any assignments.

Student Success Tips are located in the Study Tools on the WebCT Homepage for this course. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the various ways that you can use to increase your chances of being successful in this course.

Note #2: Not all assignments in each chapter have been assigned - only those that support the Broward outcomes for this course.

Note #3: According to the grading scale any score below 60% is not passing. Any Quia score below 60% is a failing grade.
